Nigerian troops have rescued 13 farmers from bandits after a gun duel around Gwagwada area of Chikun local government area of Kaduna State.
Rural Post however reports that two of the farmers were earlier killed by the bandits before the arrival of security operatives.
Kaduna State Government, while confirming the incident said the farmers who were originally from Dutse in Chikun LGA were attacked by armed bandits while on their way to work on a farm located around Bakin Kasuwa in the Gwagwada general area of the same LGA.
The state Commissioner of Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan in a statement said troops on the height of credible intelligence had trailed the bandits to a forest near Bana village and engaged them in a gun fight before rescuing the farmers.
Aruwan however said after the successful operation, the troops had discovered that the bandits had shot dead two of the volunteers before their arrival and identified the deceased as Ezekiel Iliya and Nasara Yohanna. He said the bandits had also razed a church and looted some houses before the abduction.
The commissioner said Governor Nasir El-Rufai had upon receiving the report commended the swift response of the troops in rescuing the victims while commiserating with the families of the deceased and extended his sympathy to the Church.
He said El-Rufai also prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased and tasked the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to conduct an immediate assessment of the damages.
