The Zamfara State Police Command has confirmed the killing of two police officers during a gun duel with bandits even though it said scores of the bandits were neutralized by security operatives in the process.
The command in a statement by its Public Relations Officer, SP Mohammed Shehu said upon receiving a report that bandits in their numbers had stormed Magami town in Gusau local government area at the weekend, the Commissioner of Police, CP Hussaini Rabiu had directed Police Tactical Units in the area to ensure protection of lives and properties of the people.
“The tactical units moved in swiftly and engaged the bandits to a gun duel. As a result of the encounter, the attack was repelled. While unspecified number of bandits were neutralised, many of them escaped with possible gun shot wounds. However, two of the police operatives paid the supreme price while defending the innocent members of the communities. No loss of life from the side of the communities,” the police said.
The statement noted that the Commissioner of Police had further deployed additional tactical operatives to the area to complement the ongoing bush combing operations aimed at forestalling further attacks on nearby villages. “The CP has warned the recalcitrant armed bandits to either surrender their arms and embrace peace or face the consequences,” it stated.
